When we think of Keanu Reeves, we often associate him with his successful career in the movie industry. However, music also plays an important role in his life. In the early 90s, Reeves played bass for the band Dogstar, which surprisingly went on to become one of the hottest alternative rock bands in Hollywood.
Though the band called it quits in 2002, in 2023, almost two decades later, Reeves joined his bandmates on stage again. This gave fans a blast from the past and a new glimpse of what could be coming in the future.
A Special Moment for Dogstar Fans
As longtime Dogstar fans, the band reunion that was announced in early 2023 was a moment fans had been looking forward to for a long time. After all, it is not every day that a Hollywood star like Reeves takes to the stage with his bandmates to perform.
As expected, the reunion concert was a huge success, with fans going wild over the band’s musical chemistry and Reeves’ bass-playing skills, which they had not seen for over two decades.
A Warm Welcome for Reeves on Stage
Before Reeves took to the stage, he was greeted by his bandmate, Robert Mailhouse, who reassured him that the band still had its chemistry and that they would give it their all together once they got up there.
According to reports, the band’s setlist included old hits such as “Bittersweet” and “Cornerstore.” Something the band played with the same passion and energy as they did back in the 90s.
A Look Back at Dogstar’s Formation and Career
As mentioned, Dogstar was formed in 1991 when Reeves and Mailhouse met at a supermarket and connected through a shared love of music. Mailhouse had previously played drums for the band MARTINI RANCH. This band had some moderate success in the 80s.
When Reeves joined the group as a bassist and backup singer, they found a unique chemistry that surprised everyone, considering music was not something that Keanu was well known for at that time.
Their music was alternative rock on the edgy, punky side with lyrics that spoke to a generation of people hungry for fresh music. The band’s initial lineup comprised Reeves on bass, Mailhouse on drums, and singer/guitarist Gregg Miller, who joined the band in 1992.
Though Miller left in 1995, the band continued without him, thus finding success even after Reaves’ acting career had started gaining momentum.
Reeves’ Love for Music
In an interview with Billboard, Reeves admitted that he underestimated how much he would miss performing with his friends in Dogstar. He stated that he could have been happy had he been a touring musician rather than an actor and that he still had a great love for music and performing with his buddies.
This admission from Reeves has made some fans believe that there could be more to come from him in terms of music. Only only time will tell.
